The young people I mentor don’t realise how much I also take from our conversations and apply to my work as a lecturer and supervisor.Andrew Reid | 尤物视频 | Lecturer in Games Production
Dr Andrew Reid, Lecturer in Games Production, engages in mentoring of young people at a local secondary school.
Having previously had roles as a STEM ambassador and volunteer fundraiser, Andrew was inspired to volunteer for after an open information session was advertised through Abertay's internal communications.
Coming from an area of social deprivation and a first-generation university student, Andrew feels it is part of his duty to actively engage with young people from similar communities and to guide them towards their own personal goals.
His mentorship through MCR Pathways allows him to be a consistent supporter to a young person towards positive destinations of employment or further study.
Andrew said:
It鈥檚 an incredibly rewarding experience when you see a young person realise their potential and knowing you have had even the slightest influence. I feel a great sense of pride after every week.
Some highlights from his mentoring have included supporting a young person into a college course and nurturing their confidence to represent the school and the MCR Pathways programme to ministerial officials.
Andrew is keen to highlight that his mentorship of young people takes place on a weekly basis and spans a full school year, but he is in a willing and able position to make up additional time during his working week.
By meeting young people where they are at and supporting their own personal journey, Andrew has developed a more profound appreciation of mentorship as a critical aspect of addressing social inequalities in the pursuit of 鈥済etting it right for every child鈥.
